Atrioventricular (AV) septal defect consists of an ostium primum type atrial septal defect and a common AV valve, with or without an associated inlet (AV septal type) ventricular septal defect (VSD). These defects result from maldevelopment of the endocardial cushions. Complete AVSD is characterized by a primum atrial septal defect (ASD) that is contiguous with an inlet ventricular septal defect (VSD), and the presence of a common AV valve. The common AV valve is composed of five leaflets: anterior and posterior bridging leaflets, an anterior leaflet (present on the right side), and right and left lateral leaflets. In some cases, the heart valves that control the flow of blood between the upper and lower chambers are also not formed correctly. The left ventricular (LV) outflow tract (OT) in atrioventricular (AV) septal defect is an important structure that paradoxically is hardly ever seen by a surgeon.

But, child need to be on regular and life long follow-up with a paediatric cardiologist form leakage of heart valves, narrowing in any valve, heart beat disorders, artificial heart valve assessment if replaced etc if any.
ASDs include septum primum defect, septum secundum defect, sinus venosus defect of the superior vena cava (SVC) type and inferior vena cava (IVC) type, and coronary sinus defect. An atrioventricular (AV) canal defect is a large hole in the center of the heart. It’s caused by the following problems with heart structure: Atrial septal defect (ASD). A hole in the dividing wall (atrial septum) that separates the atria in the heart. Ventricular septal defect (VSD).

Atrioventricular septal defects (AVSDs), also known as atrioventricular canal defects or endocardial cushion defects, comprise a relatively wide range of defects involving the atrial septum, ventricular septum, and one or both of the tricuspid or mitral valve.

Figure 1. Right-dominant atrioventricular septal defect. In this example, the smaller left ventricle is apex forming. Attempted biventricular repair failed because of severe mitral stenosis. Abbreviations and Acronyms AV atrioventricular AVSD atrioventricular septal defect AVVI atrioventricular valve index LAR long axis left ventricular/right Atrioventricular (AV) canal defects are a group of congenital cardiac defects involving the AV septum and AV valves (ie, mitral and tricuspid valves) (figure 1). They are also referred to as AV septal defects, endocardial cushion defects, or persistent AV ostium.
These defects result from maldevelopment of the endocardial cushions. Atrioventricular Septal Defects are characterized by complete absence of AV septum Additional features A common atrioventricular ring A five leaflet valve that guards the common AV orifice An unwedged left ventricular outflow tract LV mass characterized by longer distance from apex to aortic valve than from apex to left AV valve Also known as Endocardial cushion defect, AV canal defect Figure 18.1: A schematic drawing showing types and anatomic locations of atrial septal defects (ASDs) as seen from an unroofed right atrium. ASDs include septum primum defect, septum secundum defect, sinus venosus defect of the superior vena cava (SVC) type and inferior vena cava (IVC) type, and coronary sinus defect. A partial atrioventricular canal defect is the less severe form of this heart defect. The hole does not extend between the lower chambers of the heart and the valves are better formed.
